We all have certain family recipes that others just aren't able to duplicate to the way "our own family" might make it. I remember my first birthday after my husband and I married. My MIL always makes a special dinner with the menu provided by the birthday person. Obviously from reading the title of this entry I love Beef Stroganoff and so it was the main entree of this birthday meal. This was my first experience into the world of "nobody makes it like my own family" when a bowl of the beef sauce was put on the table and it had ground beef in it (and I think the sauce contained cream of mushroom soup too). Needless to say that while I love my MIL dearly, and how she always goes above and beyond for these occasions, my taste buds were disappointed. Lesson learned: Provide Recipe For Any Special Meals
So here is my Grandma's Beef Stroganoff recipe old school style (not heart healthy nor low fat):
1 Round Steak, cut into 1/2"x3" strips
2 Tbsp Flour
1 Tsp Paprika
1 1/2 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Pepper
1/4 C Shortening
1/4 C Water (I prefer a 1/2 cup)
Mushrooms, sliced
Onions, chopped
2 Tbsp Butter
1 C Sour Cream
1 Pkg Egg Noodles (cook just before serving)
Mix flour, salt, paprika and pepper in a bag. Shake meat in flour mixture and add to the already hot shortening - fry until brown. Pour off some of the grease. Add water, cover tightly and simmer for 90 minutes. Add mushrooms and onions 60 minutes into simmer.
Fold in sour cream - mix well - do not boil.
Bon Appetite!
