A Fungus Among Us

A month ago we discovered a dry patch of skin on Mr. B's head. Our pediatrician diagnosed this as cradle cap and prescribed some shampoo to help it go away. Two weeks later the patch had gotten angry looking (thick and grey/green in color) and so back to the doctor we went. This time the doc realized his error and assured me we had a fungus among us - oh joy.

Mr. B gets to take some awesome pills a few times a day that only have some mildly scary side effects. Unfortunately, it is the best course of treatment as nobody has done any research on any of the other drugs used to treat this fungus and children.

As a precaution to prevent spreading the fungus I've been washing his pillowcase and towels in hot water each day. He is washing his hands all the time and even has his very own hand sanitizer bottle at his table at school.

Last week I took Mr. B to the dermatologist to be to sure we were on the correct coarse of treatment. She concurred with our pediatrician and also recommended some anti-fungal shampoo and cream. Now not only am I washing a truck load of laundry a day but I also get to bathe Mr. B twice a day. Luckily Mr. B has been great about all this and complains very little about the pills, hand washing and bathes.

Sunday while we were getting ready for church I was curling Beeb's hair. When I parted her hair on the side I noticed a familiar looking fungus on her head. (imaging my excitement) A trip to the doctor on Monday confirmed that she has the fungus too and gets to start on her own course of treatment and I get to wash even more laundry each day.

To top it off it turns out that the shampoo and cream the dermatologist prescribed irritated Mr. B's fungus and now he has a rash down his neck and behind his ear. I've stopped using them and hope his rash clears up soon.

And to really add that fine blow to my month our dryer died. Today I get to take all our wet laundry to the Laundromat.

At least the sun is out :-)

Sad, sad day for you. Someone else told me about some kids in the area having the same thing. It sounds like it is out and about. I guess I better start paying better attention.

Hey Rebecca, I hope it clears up soon! I've missed you on PSH and OPS, but I understand that it is SO time consuming. I was just reading some of my old forum posts and WoW you all had a lot of patience with me! Thanks!
